Classic Scary Movies
You have probably heard of these, and if you haven’t, you’re missing out. These movies are some of the more common and influential horror movies on this list. You will find that characteristics of these movies pop up in other horror movies all the time!
Friday the 13th
Description: I feel like this Slasher series is one of the most classic of all time. Even if you have never watched it, you’ve probably heard about at least one of the movies following Jason Voorhees, who supposedly drowned as a child. Voorhees then gets his revenge by going on murder sprees around Camp Crystal Lake. These films have made over $350 Million since the beginning. That profit should speak for itself. Watch the first one or bing them all!

The exorcist
Description: There are also multiple movies with this title as well. This movie follows the efforts a mother makes to save her possessed daughter. In 1974 when the original movie came out, the New York Times reported multiple heart attacks and a miscarriage at the showing. If you’re looking to spook your friends, this might be a good option.

The Shining
Description: Personally, I love this psychological horror movie. I’ve watched it multiple times, which is the only reason I rated it a 9 instead of a 10. It’s also based off of a Stephen King book, so that alone is a good reason to watch it. This movie is based around a couple and their son who move out to the Overlook Hotel to work as off season caregivers. However, after the reality of isolation sets in (with the help of supernatural forces), the father begins losing his sanity and eventually begins to turn against his family.

The Ring
Description: Personally, I am not the biggest fan of this movie. It’s a movie I watched because it is such a classic. The movie is focused around a cursed video tape, which many people suddenly died after watching. Throughout the movie, you witness the victims try to figure out the meaning behind this tape.

Texas chainsaw massacre
Description: For some reason, I watched this like three times before I realized it was about cannibals (I am a little slow to catch on, okay). But, regardless, this movie shows the fate of a group of friends that end up in Leatherface’s territory and begin fighting for their lives. This movie is loosely based on the murders of Ed Gein, but very few details are true.

1922
Description: Okay, so this one is not technically a classic, but it is pretty good, so check it out. Unlike most movies, this movie is not about ghosts or paranormal forces. This is a movie simply about a father with the help of his son killing his wife and living with the consequences afterwards. The family is haunted by the actions more than by the person.

Description: There are two parts to this movie, which is based on the Stephen King book with the same name. This movie is about the torment a clown named Pennywise inflicts on the town of Derry. A group of kids then work to fight the forces of Pennywise and make an oath to return again the next time It returns.

Other Great Scary Movies
Orphan
Description: This is my favorite movies of all time! It isn’t necessarily scary in a ghost and demons type way. It’s about a family that adopts a child after having a miscarriage, only to find out things aren’t what they seem.

Case 39
Description: Again, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. A caseworker is assigned a sweet girl, who she fears is in great danger of neglect and abuse. The worker begins to get attached to the girl and ends up fostering her. After fostering her for a bit, she learns the dark secrets from the previous family and why they did what they did.

The Conjuring
Description: This movie is pretty common, I think, but if you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a watch. I made my aunt and uncle watch it on the big screen and to this day they talk about how scary it is (it’s not that bad). The movie is about a married couple that investigates a dark presents that continues to torment a family after they move into a small farm house in Rhode Island. Part of what makes it so “scary” is the fact it has tons of jump scares, so be prepared.

Description: I’m not the biggest fan of this movie. The plot begins with a couple visiting the girl’s family, which is not fond of their interracial relationship. As they stay at the house, the boyfriend begins finding out more information about the family’s (as well as the town’s) dark secrets.

Description: This movie has been remade, and I have not watched the newer version. After a while, the friend believe the “Candyman” has been summoned and targeted her.

Clinical
Description: So, I recently forced my boyfriend to watch this movie because I love it… and he fell asleep (he later rewatched it and said it wasn’t bad). For this reason, I will say, this movie isn’t for everyone. It begins with a psychiatrist who struggles with PTSD after her client attempted suicide in her office. After taking on her first trauma client after the incident, she begins experience many unsettling incidents, but are they real or just in her mind?

Us
Description: This movie is so interesting to me. It isn’t really scary, I don’t think, but don’t knock it, yet. Can you imagine going on vacation only to get attacked by… You? This movie shows just that when a family’s beach house gets invaded by intruders that look just like them.

Relic
Description: I was soooo hyped to watch this because everything I read had great reviews. Sadly, I was a bit disappointed. It is a good movie, obviously or it wouldn’t be on this list, but it wasn’t what I expected. This movie’s plot revolves around a mother and daughter who go visit the grandmother only to find she is missing. After a couple days she appears like nothing ever happened and refused to mention any details. As the granddaughter seeks to find answers, she walks herself straight into a trap.

Escape room
Description: I know I am not the only one that loves escape rooms. I mean I never escape, but at least I get to leave and tell the story afterwards. Unfortunately, for some of the people in this movie, that isn’t the case. This escape room is more realistic than ever as players begin to play with their fate.

Not-So-Scary Movies
These movies are great if you aren’t a fan of all of the jump scares, possessions, and blood. Please note, any low rating on this section are simply because I prefer the scarier alternatives. They are movies that many people like, I just don’t prefer.
Hocus pocus
Description: This is a classic halloween movie that isn’t scary. I think a lot of us probably watched it at least once growing up, even if we don’t quite remember it. Basically, a group of teens accidentally release three witches in Massachusetts and have to fight to conceal them forever. I know, that’s a boring description, but just give it a chance!

Description: Casper is hands down the cutest ghost of all! Sadly, he becomes quite infatuated with Kat, the ghost whisperers daughter ( just kidding, floating spirits aren’t really my thing). Watch as Casper tries to beat all odds and get Kat’s attention. It’s a cute and funny movie.

Secret window
Description: I love Johnny Depp, and I think his fan base only grew after his court case. Personally, I think this might be one of his best movies. The first time I watched it I barely paid attention and realized at the end I misses out on a pretty good movie… So I obviously had to rewatch it. It follows the main character (Johnny Depp) as he deal with not only a rough divorce, but a case of a stalker as well. The movie has some good twists as well. Check it out on Vudu, Amazon or Youtube.
